Kat Murphy is a mixed media artist and designer based in New London, Connecticut. With over 26 years of experience in luxury interiors, she collaborated closely with her late mentor and design partner to create bespoke residential and commercial spaces. Today, Kat brings that refined design sensibility into her studio practice, blending painting, collage, and sculptural objets d’art. Drawing inspiration from pop culture, decorative arts, and historical motifs, her work transforms personal narratives and intimate objects into visually rich, narrative-driven compositions. Each piece reflects a layered process of discovery and reinterpretation, merging fine art and design in unexpected ways. Murphy’s upcoming exhibition —A Tin Can on a String: Conversations from the Collection at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum (May 15–August 2026), continues this exploration, bridging contemporary practice with historical collections and inviting viewers to engage with the creative process itself.
Her work combines painting, collage, and line drawing, inspired by pop culture, historical motifs, and the decorative arts. In addition to producing original pieces, Kat creates intimate, custom artwork that draws on personal items and meaningful experiences, transforming them into layered visual narratives. Whether through textiles, wall coverings, or bespoke commissions, her work invites a deeper connection between art and memory.
